In This Course Both Your Students and You WIN!
Teachers Learn How To: | Students: |
---|---|
Simplify lesson planning “I can plan effectively using a quick four-step process. Using a template or sticky notes, I’ve got this thing!” | Increase a sense of efficacy “I can do this” |
Orchestrate powerful classroom discussions “ I can identify the types of thinking I see around the room and then select and sequence the ones that will provide the best discussion and movement towards our learning goals while building community and efficacy in all of my learners.” | Fully engage in every lesson “I have something to offer” |
Choose the right problems “I can weed through some fluff as well as problems that take away student thinking to select a problem worth building a concepts from.” | Persevere without direct instruction to make sense of mathematics. “I can try something, this is just my rough draft thinking. I don’t need constant teacher help.” |
Choose less problems “I can select less problems with confidence! Dear goodness me I felt like a drill sergeant rushing us through all of the problems every day. Less is more. Now I understand when it’s time to practice a lot of problems and when we’re just trying to build understanding. ” | Consistently and frequently engage in math reasoning “I can repeat what I heard, add on, make connections, or explain my own thinking.” |
Generate and use open questions & prompts “I get the difference now between an open and a closed question and how a conversation stops or continues based on what and how I ask it.” | Reason, compare & contrast thinking and methods. “I can engage with your thinking and compare it to my thinking instead of just regurgitating the teacher’s ideas.” |
Anchor learning as an explicit teaching strategy as well as a spiral review strategy “I can break apart and define the thinking of the day to make it accessible for all students and to make it clear to both of us the key learning. I can use this each day in my unit to help revisit and review concepts.” | Use multiple methods “I know demonstrating multiple methods means I’m flexible in my thinking and have a stronger foundation.” |
What real-world educators are saying about Empower Consulting and Shannon Kiebler:
It's a great way to deepen the collaboration between teachers in the same grade level. It really got us thinking about how we all teach and structure our math time.
4th Grade Teacher
The most useful PD is when you learn things that you can apply immediately and are relevant to your classroom. This type of PD checks both those boxes.
4th Grade Teacher
It has been helpful to see the other teachers teach. It has also been very constructive and positive feedback from my teammates.
3rd Grade Teacher
I loved getting to see my teammates teach and learn from one another. It was also helpful to have a directed conversation about a common goal (math talk).
1st Grade Teacher
"It was really nice to see how my teammates were instruction math and specifically student talk. I gained great insight and ideas on how to better my teaching.
1st Grade Teacher
After your training, I realized we want our students to understand math, not just get through a textbook. It was great to see how easily you can incorporate math talk and how just putting a little spin on your lessons can make them more inquiry…..My kids are going to become some great mathematicians thanks to you! Solving problems and critical thinking will overlap into all other subjects and aspects of their lives.

I love teaching in a math community! Having classmates cheer on a struggling student, students not giving up, students saying peanut butter/jelly partners was one of their favorite parts of second grade warms my heart. Teaching math is one of the favorite parts of my day - which is saying something from a former literacy coach! Inquiry-based instruction allows all students to be successful. Even my lowest students can understand and draw. I used to think for the lowest students it would be best to just show them one way to solve math problems so as not to confuse them. Nope. Multiple methods is the way to go. Even my high flyers need to show me all of their thinking so I know they truly understand. It is a great talking piece with parents at conferences when they are wondering why we don't ability group for math anymore.

Workshop Details
(What’s covered in each module.)
In this module learn methods for knowing a lesson goal and getting through the ‘fluff’ in the textbook.
Learn effective and simple planning techniques for identifying the know, understand and do for each lesson.
In this module learn the why and what behind a flipped, inquiry-based classroom. Why does it matter? What impact does it have? How does it change how I guide students through lessons?
How do we choose the right type of problem to launch our lessons? In this module learn about the types of problems that make learning more engaing and effective and apply them to your textbook lessons.
In this module, now that you have your problem, you will learn about strategies that are led with open questions and provide ways for all students to access and engage with the content.
In this module learn how to effectively anticipate, monitor, select and sequence student work. How do we know what which student work to select and discuss? What and how should students discuss? to choose? Learn this through real classroom examples and apply to your own lessons.
In this module learn how to effectively wrap up a lesson so that learning remains and connections are made to future and past learning. How do we ensure the important learning of the day stays focused and relevant for upcoming lessons? How do we know if students have got it? In this module, we will explore anchoring important learning as you go through your lesson so that instruction remains explicit and targeted.
